Casting / Splinting
Treating injuries to bones and soft tissues including your muscles, tendons and ligaments to reduce pain, swelling, and muscle spasm.
OUR APPROACH
Acute fractures, particularly those that are nondisplaced, may often be managed in the clinic with the application of plaster of paris or synthetic (fibreglass type) casts.
For upper and lower limb injuries, we have physios skilled in the fabrication and application of splints and casts, which can be waterproof where appropriate.
We use a range of different materials such as plaster of paris, synthetic/fibreglass and thermoplastics, depending on the injury and requirements for stabilisation.
WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Clients with nondisplaced, stable fractures of the upper limb or lower limb.
Children with green stick fractures
Wrist sprains, scaphoid fractures, mallet fingers and other finger and wrist ligament injuries
Casting and splinting may be completed for patients of all ages
Types of splints and casts include thumb spicas, below elbow or above elbow casts, below knee and above knee casts
WHY A PHYSIO?
Casting and splinting are treatments that immobilise injured body parts, like bones, tendons, and ligaments, to promote healing, reduce pain, and provide support.
Providing immediate acute injury management, without the need to attend the emergency department.
Our team ensures the proper healing and rehabilitation after an injury or surgery. In cases where waterproofing is possible, concern around getting the cast wet is removed, and more daily activities may be possible.
Removable splints or casts optimise skin hygiene and wound care.
